Taking Out The ‘Trash’

Hi there!

Whether it happens for you at the beginning of spring, the start of Summer, or before the winter season, at some point we all develop an impulse to clear things out — to open windows, throw away what's been collecting dust, and make room for something better.

We tend to apply this logic to our closets, our garages, maybe our email inboxes.

But what about the things beneath the surface you can't see?

In this month's episode, Rick and Joe explore head trash. Through years of experience, all of us have accumulated lies we believe about ourselves, as well as fears and inherited beliefs that can easily get in the way when you start uncovering your unique design.

Listen now to learn more about how head trash forms, how to identify it, and how to remove it!

NEW EPISODE: Start With Who Podcast

"Head trash distorts how we see ourselves and can keep us not only from operating authentically from our design, but from fulfilling our purpose in life." — Rick Newton

You might know it as your inner critic, or imposter syndrome. It's more subtle than you'd think — and it's been shaping your decisions longer than you realize.

When head trash surfaces, it's actually a gift because it's an opportunity to deal with something that's holding you back.

This month we've added chapter four to the preview from Rick Newton's upcoming book, Start With Who. Rick shares his own personal story on head trash.

Reflection

Head trash isn’t always obvious. It can show up as hesitation, avoidance, or shrinking when you have something to say.

Pause for a moment: think of a recent time where you held back. What was the voice inside saying about you? Write it down, name the root lie you have been hearing and believing.

What is the truth? Write down the direct refutation. If you have been struggling with thoughts like: "I am terrible at public speaking,” replace that with the truth: “What I have to say is important, I am capable of learning how to deliver a good message.”

Next, reach out to at least one person — a friend, a colleague, a spouse — and share what you found. Take this opportunity to have an honest conversation and invite those closest to you to help start rooting out the lies.

Let’s Stay Connected

As Rick reminds us, no one is able to walk out their calling outside the context of community.

If anything resonated in this month’s episode — or raised a question — let us know! We'd love to hear from you.
